While atrial fibrillation is a potentially serious condition, it is important to remember that you have options. With proper medical care, it can be successfully managed, or in many cases even cured. What is the Mini-Maze? The first is a hand-held Isolator Pen that stimulates nerves on the outside of the heart. This device isolates and eliminates, or burns, the nerves that fire erratically and cause irregular heartbeats. The same pen immediately tests the effectiveness of each burn. During the Mini-Maze procedure, bio-polar, radiofrequency clamps are also used to create channels, or a maze, across the surface of the heart. The clamps deliver energy to create scar tissue blocking erratic electrical impulses. As a result, impulses that normally regulate heartbeats are transmitted through the new maze and a more regular rhythm is established. Patients quickly return to a more active lifestyle and are able to look forward to a future where the negative outcomes associated with atrial fibrillation are significantly reduced. |
